Embracing relationship systems with Keith and Nairy McMahon

On october 16th, we gathered many of our fellow Frontiers for an evening all about Relationship Systems Coaching.

Nanna Wass-Gordon

We spoke with Nairy McMahon and Keith McMahon, both experienced coaches specializing in Relationship Systems Coaching. Their expertise offers a fresh perspective on how this approach shifts the focus from individual coaching to understanding the dynamics within relationships. This method has become increasingly relevant for organizations striving to strengthen collaboration and foster resilience in their teams.

For us at Forefront, with the unique advantage of an in-house coach like Christopher McCann, this approach resonates deeply as we prioritize fostering growth both for individuals and teams.

From finance to systems coaching

Keith and Nairy's paths to Relationship Systems Coaching began within the financial sector. Keith, with experience in banking and HR, reflected on how he found value in systems thinking. He shared, “I’ve worked in quite a traditional background. Coaching and systems thinking made a lot of sense in terms of my interaction with teams in multiple environments and different cultures.” Nairy’s journey followed a similar path. As a former banker, she was intrigued by how businesses could integrate community impact with internal team dynamics. "It helps us have tools and skills to articulate what we are feeling and grow into it," she explained.

Focusing on relationships, not just individuals

A central tenet of Relationship Systems Coaching is its focus on the "relationship system." Nairy emphasized, “The relationship itself has wisdom and a voice that’s beyond the individuals.” This means that when a team collaborates, their interactions can spark creativity and innovation, forming something greater than the sum of their parts. Keith added, “Every relationship system is different, and you're coaching that system as a distinct entity.”

Real-world applications

Organizations approach Keith and Nairy with various challenges, from communication breakdowns to siloed team structures. They described a project with a large tech company facing rapid growth and team burnout. Through relationship-focused workshops, they created spaces for team members to reconnect, reducing burnout significantly over 18 months. “It’s about giving people time to connect on a human level,” Nairy noted, emphasizing how such small but intentional actions can lead to meaningful change.

Redefining leadership with Relationship Systems Coaching

Relationship Systems Coaching encourages a shift in leadership from focusing solely on individual traits to understanding team dynamics. Keith highlighted, “Leadership is about creating an environment where each person’s strengths are integrated into the team’s overall purpose.” Nairy agreed, adding that the relational trust built through this coaching is essential, especially during periods of change. This approach helps teams adapt and maintain alignment with broader organizational goals, even when navigating uncertainty.

The role of Relationship Systems Coaching in the modern workplace

Keith and Nairy see a growing role for Relationship Systems Coaching as organizations navigate changes such as remote work and the need for greater team cohesion. “The future of coaching lies in how we can help organizations see the power of their relationships,” Keith remarked. Nairy believes that as companies increasingly value psychological safety and emotional intelligence, Relationship Systems Coaching’s emphasis on relational dynamics will become even more essential.

A new path to team success

Our discussion with Keith and Nairy shed light on how Relationship Systems Coaching is changing the way organizations approach teamwork and leadership. By focusing on the dynamics within relationships, they help teams unlock their collective potential. At Forefront, we see the power of this approach firsthand as we continue to foster a culture that values connection and collaboration. As more leaders recognize the importance of relational health, Relationship Systems Coaching provides a roadmap to a more adaptable and thriving workplace.
