Copilot - from Buzz to Business

In collaboration with Microsoft, we hosted the event "From Buzz to Business - Lessons Learned on Copilot for Microsoft 365," where Emma Trygger, CDO at Carnegie Investment Bank, shared her insights from the Copilot pilots with a curious audience.

Hello Emma! Could you tell us about your role at Carnegie?

I am the Chief Digital Officer at Carnegie Investment Bank, where I've worked in various roles for about 12 years. I lead our digitalization efforts for the parent company with a team of around 10 people, focusing on both strategic and operational aspects. My group includes a Digital Transformation Office with architects, change managers, and a team handling client lifecycle management. We're responsible for exploring new technological developments and market surveillance, including implementing Copilot for Microsoft 365 with Forefront and developing an AI solution called "chatCIB" based on Azure's predefined services. Our primary goal is to utilize the outcome of the pilots on internal data.

What motivated you to explore Copilot through a Readiness Assessment?

Our primary motivation was the belief that Copilot could significantly enhance our daily efficiency and become a powerful tool for us at Carnegie Investment Bank. We are confident in our ability to identify relevant use cases, but felt we needed external expertise in the startup phase, as generative AI is a new area. A Readiness Assessment provides a comprehensive overview and helps us understand where we stand, and even though the outcome shouldn't be viewed as an absolute "truth", it offers a good starting point.

How did the pilot projects turn out?

We divided the first pilot into two parts: one with superusers from various departments and one with an entire department. The superuser pilot is completed, and we're now rolling out Copilot to whole departments. The pilot progressed as I expected. We quickly realized the need to train our users in M365 before delving into Copilot to maximize its utility. We will continue to scale and experiment, but we need to continually ask ourselves which approach is the best, and identify departments that can benefit the most from Copilot, and creating a plan for others to follow.

How do you envision the CDO role evolving in 5-10 years?

It's challenging to predict over such a long period. Generally, we overestimate what can be achieved in a year and underestimate what can happen in ten years. I foresee more specialized roles within digitalization, which is exciting for someone like myself, who enjoys working with change and business development.

What AI trends do you anticipate in banking and finance by 2025?

There are some low-hanging fruits the banking and finance industry can leverage in the short term. The overall paradigm shift might take longer due to the industry's lack of harmonization. However, consumer-facing chatbots and efficiency gains from tools like Copilot are promising. These trends apply broadly across various sectors.

Any tips for those interested in starting with Copilot?

An assessment is a great starting point! Examine your current state, ensure security and data considerations, and don't hesitate to experiment.
